Privacy Policy

This is a working draft, not a legal document. It accurately describes what this app actually does today, but hasn't been reviewed by a lawyer. Have it reviewed before relying on it for a public launch, especially for users in the EU (GDPR) or California (CCPA).

What we collect

  • Account info: name, email address, and a hashed password (we never store your actual password).
  • Uploaded photos and videos: processed to extract a date/time, temperature, and similar data, then the original file is deleted. We keep a resized thumbnail and the extracted data, not the original upload.
  • Camera locations: if you add a camera's coordinates, we look up its zip code, county, and state to make that data more useful.
  • Login activity: the IP address, approximate location (city/region/country), and device/browser type used each time you log in.
  • Billing info: handled entirely by Stripe - we never see or store your card details.

Third-party services we use

Parts of your data pass through these services to make the app work:

  • Stripe - payment processing, if you subscribe to a paid plan.
  • Open-Meteo - historical weather lookups (temperature, wind, pressure) based on a camera's coordinates and a sighting's date.
  • US Census Bureau - reverse geocoding a camera's coordinates into a zip code, county, and state.
  • ip-api.com - approximate location lookup from your IP address at login.
  • OpenStreetMap / Esri - map tiles shown when you place a camera on the map.

How long we keep things

Original uploaded photos and videos are deleted automatically as soon as we've extracted what we need from them - usually within seconds. Extracted data (dates, thumbnails, weather, moon phase, etc.) is kept as long as your account is active. If you delete a sighting, buck, or camera, its data is removed. If you delete your account, all of your data is removed.

Cookies

We use a single session cookie to keep you logged in. We don't use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies.

Your data, your control

You can delete individual sightings, bucks, or cameras at any time from within the app. To request a full export or deletion of your account data, contact us using the details below.

Children's privacy

This app isn't directed at children and isn't intended for use by anyone under 13.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
